General Information
Features: subtropical rainforest, subalpine tussock and
Wild West Coast beaches.
Starting at Collingwood this stunning walk brings you out onto
subtropical West Coast beaches with Nikau Palms & drift wood to
finish in Karamea.
Walking the 77 kilometre track takes 5 days, easy to medium walking,
suitable for most people.
All rivers and streams are bridged and boots, while advisable
are not necessary. Excellent in spring, summer and autumn (September
to March), but not recommended in winter.
Track accommodation is in public backcountry lodges with
bunkroom sleeping and shared facilities. Lightweight 2 person
tents are also carried to allow flexability in overnight stopping
places. Hikers are welcome to use these for sleeping if they would
rather not use the bunkrooms.
Track Grading
On a grading system of 1 (easy) through to 5 (tough walking,
very fit people only) we would grade this track as 2&1/2 . The
days are moderate being easily managed by those with average fitness.
There is time to relax and take swims on the way.(swimming in
the sea on the West Coast is not recommended)
On this walk hikers carry all food & equipment with them.
5 Day/4 night Guided walking Tour package includes Department
of Conservation fees, guide, food, camping equipment., and Government
Tax, end of track transport to Karamea. Personal hiking gear is
not included.
End of trip transport options -
(1) Scenic Air flight back to Collingwood (cost 245 pp), and then
return
by road to Motueka
(2) road transfer to Westport on the West Coast - costs $85 pp
Cancellations: Walks paid for and cancelled within 30 days of
or during travel will not be refunded under any circumstances. We recommend
you have travel insurance & can arrange this for you.
